What is tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis is caused when the tonsils become inflamed or infected. Tonsils are two masses of tissue that act as filters for the airways, positioned at the back of the throat. Tonsillitis results when the tonsils become overwhelmed by bacteria.

What are adenoids?

Adenoids are a collection of soft tissue behind the nasal passages. Adenoids function as a feature of the immune system.

What is an adenoidectomy?

An adenoidectomy involves removal of the tonsils or adenoids through the mouth and includes incisions only where they’re removed. The child is under anesthesia at the time of this operation. The majority of patients return home right after the procedure, but you should anticipate being in post-surgery for 5 hours to allow the doctors to closely monitor your child.

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder occurring when the child's sleep is interrupted repeatedly due to a halt in breathing. Be sure to tell your doctor if you suspect this. There are 2 kinds:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) - The most common and is due to a blockage of the airway, when the soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses during sleep
  • Central sleep apnea - The brain doesn't signal the muscles to breathe, caused by a malfunction of the respiratory control center

Sleep apnea can also be caused by enlarged tonsils.

What is sinusitis in children?

Sinusitis is simply a sinus infection caused when the sinuses become infected or swollen and can be caused by allergies, colds, flu when the nasal passages are blocked and unable to drain mucus, allowing bacteria, virus, or fungi to grow.

What type of shotless allergy treatments are there?

There are many options for non-injection treatment for children:

  • At-home remedies
  • Allergy Tablets
  • Eye Drops
  • Antihistamines
  • Anti-inflammatory Nasal Spray
  • Nasal decongestant

Always read instructions carefully and discuss with your doctor before using at home remedies on children under 1-year-old. Children's doses will vary greatly from adult doses, so if the package doesn't specify a children's dosage, discuss with the doctor first.
