What Causes Enlarged Pores—and How Can You Minimize Them?
Pores are skin openings that allow sweat and sebum (which is oil) to exit from glands onto the surface of your skin. Many people are self-conscious or unhappy about pores that are large or conspicuous. Though genetics play a major part in determining pore size, other factors come into play including skin oil production, overall skin health, and the environment.
Other Contributing Factors
In addition, these factors play a role:
- Aging. Proteins that provide structural support for pores include collagen and elastin. As you age, you lose these proteins in your skin, which allows your pores to widen.
- Sun damage. Overexposure to the sun’s UV rays affect collagen and elastin, and this reduces skin firmness, allowing your pores to grow larger.
- Hormonal changes. Pores become more visible beginning in puberty when changes in hormone production cause sebaceous glands to produce more oil. Women may notice that their pore size may also change during their menstrual cycle, when they get acne breakouts.
Treatments to Help Shrink Pores
- Following a regular daily skin care routine using oil-free or noncomedogenic (meaning they won’t clog your pores) products.
- Using broad sunscreen protection and hats to protect against sun damage, which can affect skin collagen and elastin.
- Considering a chemical peel treatment, using alpha or beta hydroxy acids, which you can purchase over the counter and do at home.
- Using skin products with retinol (best used at night), which helps clear dead skin cells, unclog pores, and encourage the growth of collagen.
How Marlowe Aesthetics Can Help
At Marlowe Aesthetics, we’ll work with you to help minimize your pores. We have several procedures for pore treatment including our hydrafacial and morpheus8.
HydraFacial® is an invigorating treatment that can take as little as 30 minutes. It can be tailored to meet the specific needs of all skin types. This treatment removes dead skin cells and extracts impurities while simultaneously bathing the new skin with cleansing and hydrating serums. The treatment is soothing, refreshing, and non-irritating.
Morpheus8 is a radiofrequency (RF) microneedling device, which combines the properties and benefits of both RF technology and microneedling procedures. Using the FDA-cleared Morpheus8 device, one of our skincare professionals delivers RF energy heat into the skin via ultra-thin needles, creating controlled microinjuries. This triggers a natural healing response, promoting new collagen and elastin production that resurfaces and firms skin.
