Tonsillitis
What is Tonsillitis?
Tonsillitis is the inflammation or infection of the tonsils; two small masses of tissue located at the back of the throat that help fight infection. While tonsillitis is most common in children, it can affect people of all ages. The condition can be caused by viral or bacterial infections, with strep throat being one of the most well-known bacterial causes.
Signs of Tonsillitis
Symptoms of tonsillitis often include:
- Sore throat
- Red, swollen tonsils (sometimes with white or yellow spots)
- Difficulty swallowing
- Fever
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
- Bad breath
- Fatigue or irritability (especially in children)
Treatment for Tonsillitis
Viral tonsillitis usually resolves on its own with rest, fluids, and over-the-counter pain relief. However, bacterial tonsillitis, including cases caused by Streptococcus bacteria, typically requires antibiotic treatment to fully resolve the infection and prevent complications.
In these cases, an ENT specialist may recommend a tonsillectomy, a surgical procedure to remove the tonsils. This safe and common outpatient surgery is often considered when a patient experiences:
- Multiple bouts of tonsillitis in a year
- Enlarged tonsils causing snoring or sleep apnea
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing
- Persistent infections that don’t respond well to treatment
Post-Care
Proper care after a tonsillectomy is essential for a smooth recovery. While most patients recover within 10 to 14 days, following these tips can help reduce discomfort, prevent complications, and promote healing:
- Rest is key
- Stay hydrated
- Choose soft, cold foods
- Take painkillers
- Rest your voice and limit talking
