Sore Throat
Sore Throat
A sore throat is a common symptom that can be caused by a variety of conditions, ranging from viral infections to bacterial illnesses or environmental irritants. While many sore throats are mild and resolve on their own, some can persist, recur, or be a sign of a more serious underlying issue, especially if accompanied by fever, difficulty swallowing, or swollen glands.
Strep Throat
- A painful, scratchy throat
- Red, swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches
- Fever
- Headache
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Fatigue
- Loss of appetite
Unlike viral sore throats, strep throat requires treatment with antibiotics to prevent complications and reduce the spread to others. If left untreated, it can lead to more serious conditions like tonsillitis, ear infections, or even rheumatic fever.
Causes of Sore Throat
- Viral infections (such as the common cold or flu)
- Postnasal drip from allergies or sinus infections
- Acid reflux (GERD)
- Dry air or environmental irritants
- Vocal strain
- Enlarged tonsils or chronic tonsillitis
At Marlowe MD ENT, we evaluate persistent or recurring sore throat symptoms with a thorough exam, and when necessary, diagnostic testing such as throat cultures, strep testing, or imaging studies. If tonsil or adenoid issues are contributing to chronic sore throats, surgical treatment may be discussed.
If your sore throat lasts longer than a week, is severe, or comes with additional symptoms like high fever, trouble breathing, or difficulty swallowing, it’s time to seek medical attention. Our ENT specialists are here to identify the cause of your discomfort and provide targeted treatment to help you recover quickly and comfortably.
