Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) occurs when the small passageways that connect the middle ear to the back of the nose and throat become blocked or fail to open properly. These tubes help equalize pressure in the ears and drain fluid from the middle ear. When they aren’t working as they should, it can lead to discomfort, hearing issues, and a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ears.

Signs of Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

Common symptoms of ETD include:

Eustachian tube dysfunction can be caused by allergies, sinus infections, colds, or anatomical issues. In some cases, it may be temporary and resolve on its own. However, persistent or recurrent ETD may require medical evaluation and treatment.

Our ENT specialists begin by performing a thorough examination to determine the cause of your symptoms. Depending on the severity and frequency, treatment options may include decongestants, nasal steroid sprays, allergy management, or other medications aimed at reducing inflammation and improving tube function.

Treatment for Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

Treatment for Eustachian tube dysfunction depends on the underlying cause and severity of symptoms. For many patients, conservative approaches such as nasal decongestants, saline rinses, antihistamines, or nasal steroid sprays can reduce inflammation and help the tubes function more effectively. If allergies are contributing to the problem, allergy management may also be recommended.

In cases where symptoms persist or become chronic, a minimally invasive procedure called Eustachian tube balloon dilation may be performed. This safe and effective treatment uses a small balloon to gently open the tube and restore normal pressure and drainage. Our ENT specialists tailor treatment plans to each patient to ensure long-term relief and protect hearing health.
