Tonsillitis can be quite draining and disconcerting, particularly if its cause is not fully identified.

Inflammation of the tonsils, commonly known as tonsillitis, is often accompanied by swelling, sore throat, difficulty swallowing and tender lymph nodes on the sides of the neck. While these symptoms are pretty universal among tonsillitis patients, treatments are highly dependent on the cause of the disease. In order to accurately determine what’s causing your illness, you need an examination from an experienced ENT professional. Marlowe & Marrs is home to a staff of caring and dedicated ENT doctors who are here to meet your health care needs.

What Causes Tonsillitis?

Most cases of tonsillitis are caused by viral infections, but bacterial infections may also be to blame. The most common bacteria causing tonsillitis is streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus), the bacterium that causes strep throat. Other strains of strep and other bacteria may also cause tonsillitis. The tonsils are the immune system’s first line of defense against bacteria and viruses that enter your mouth. This function may make the tonsils particularly vulnerable to infection and inflammation. If you notice any signs of fever, sore throat, stiff neck, and especially swelling in your tonsils, we urge you to request an appointment with Drs. Marlowe & Marrs.

Finding a Diagnosis

Diagnosing tonsillitis begins with a physical examination of the throat. This involves the retrieval of a culture sample by means of a swab. After retrieving the sample, it is sent to a laboratory where it examined for signs of bacteria and viruses. In some cases, a blood sample may also be required for additional help in determining the cause of your infection.

Once the root cause of your tonsillitis is found, we can provide you with the necessary treatment to get you back to feeling healthy again.

Treating Tonsillitis

For mild cases of tonsillitis, such as those caused by a cold, simple bed rest may be all that is required. For more severe cases caused by a bacterial infection, we may prescribe antibiotics. If you have been experiencing recurring or chronic tonsillitis, a tonsillectomy may be the only solution. This relatively simple surgery may reduce the number of throat infections as well as reduce your overall risk of developing strep throat in the long run. In most cases, we will do all we can to improve your condition before considering surgery.
