Cochlear Implants

For individuals with severe to profound hearing loss who receive limited benefit from hearing aids, cochlear implants may offer a solution. Unlike traditional hearing aids that amplify sound, cochlear implants bypass the damaged parts of the inner ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve, allowing sound signals to reach the brain more effectively.

Cochlear implants are most often recommended for adults and children who are unable to understand speech clearly with hearing aids alone. They may also be an option for individuals with single-sided deafness or progressive hearing loss. Candidates typically undergo a comprehensive evaluation that includes audiological testing, medical imaging, and consultation with both an ENT specialist and an audiologist to determine if a cochlear implant is the right fit.

Marlowe MD ENT offers bone anchored hearing aids and cochlear implants.

How Cochlear Implants Work

The device consists of two parts: an external processor worn behind the ear and an internal implant surgically placed under the skin and inside the cochlea. The external processor captures sound, converts it into digital signals, and sends those signals to the internal device, which then stimulates the auditory nerve.

Cochlear implant surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis and is followed by a healing period. Once healed, the device is activated and carefully programmed to suit the user’s specific hearing needs. Ongoing follow-up care and auditory rehabilitation are essential components of success, helping patients adjust to their new way of hearing and improving speech understanding over time.

At Marlowe MD ENT, we offer cochlear implant evaluations, referrals for surgery, and comprehensive post-implant care. We work closely with you through every step of the process, from candidacy assessment to device activation and long-term support.

If you or a loved one is struggling with hearing despite the use of hearing aids, a cochlear implant may offer renewed clarity and connection. Contact us today to learn more or to schedule a consultation.
