Bone-Anchored Hearing Aids (BAHA)

Certain cases of hearing loss sometimes require more than hearing aids can offer. Single sided deafness, malformations of the outer/middle ear, and conductive hearing loss can all be instances where normal hearing aids aren’t enough. In these cases, a cochlear implant or bone-anchored hearing aid (BAHA) may be a solution.

Who Is a Candidate for Bone-Anchored Hearing Aids?

BAHAs are ideal for individuals who have at least one functioning cochlea (hearing nerve). They work by bypassing the malformity or damaged part of the ear and transmit sound straight to the cochlea. Individuals of all ages can be fitted with a BAHA, including children. A small titanium implant is placed in the bone behind the ear. A sound processor attaches to this implant and converts sound into gentle vibrations that travel through bone to the inner ear.

Candidacy for a bone-anchored hearing aid will be determined by one of our professionals. First, a hearing test will need to be performed followed by a lifestyle assessment.

What You Can Expect

Most people tolerate the procedure well, feeling only mild pressure or warmth. Because NEUROMARK is designed to be precise and gentle, downtime is minimal. As the treated nerves calm over time, patients often notice less runny noses, congestion, and postnasal drip, helping them breathe, sleep, and live more comfortably.

Procedure and Recovery

Placement is typically a short outpatient surgery, performed under local or general anesthesia. Most patients return to normal activities within days. After healing, the device is programmed and fine-tuned by your audiologist.

Minor risks include skin irritation around the implant site. A healthy cochlea is required, and many people try a headband version first to test potential benefit.

Benefits of BAHAs

BAHAs often provide clearer speech, better hearing in noisy environments, and improved awareness on the side with hearing loss. Because sound is routed through bone, issues like feedback or plugged-ear sensation are greatly reduced.
